Discover the world anew way through the eyes of a geologist.
Johan Erikson, Ph.D.
Johan Erikson has worked as a geologist, science educator, and tour guide across the United States and internationally for over 20 years. He is the founder of Yellowstone GeoTours LLC, a Montana State University-Bozeman Instructor in Earth Sciences, and a full Professor of Sciences at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine.
A Certified Outdoor Guide and Wilderness First Responder, Johan has led field trips for diverse groups, including: high school classes, college classes, adult groups, professional geologists, and families throughout New England and Atlantic Canada, northern South America and the Caribbean, in the southwestern US, and his home base in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. In May of 2024, he led students and alumni to Iceland to explore volcanoes, glaciers, and waterfalls.
With years as a high-school science teacher and college professor, he has refined his teaching skills to be accessible to each audience. Inspired by his experience with immersive, place-based geology at Dartmouth, Johan created the Environmental Science Semester at Saint Joseph’s College, in which students conduct field environmental geoscience for ten weeks all while traveling and studying in Atlantic Canada and northern New England (including 1+ week on a schooner doing oceanography).
He holds a Bachelors of Geology & Geophysics from Dartmouth, a Masters in Geology from Stanford University, a Ph.D. in Geology from Dartmouth College, and a postdoctorate from Cornell University. His geologic field work – some of which was funded by the National Science Foundation – has spanned the U.S. and 15 foreign countries (Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Trinidad, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Italy, Sweden, and Iceland).

“The deepest learning happens when immersed in a subject. Just as it’s easiest and most effective to learn French while living in France, geology is best learned when immersed in mountains, rivers, coastlines, coral reefs, and canyons.” - Johan Erikson
